Nirvana Baby Lawsuit

Okay, once again, this is totally not a Led Zeppelin oriented post, but it is music related (as all of my posts will be!). This is kind of old-ish news, but I figured I'd give my opinion on it. Towards the end of August, news came out that the baby on the cover of Nirvana's album Nevermind has decided to sue 15 people involved with the album cover for $150,000 each on child pornography charges. Spencer Elden, the baby on the album cover, who is now 30, has stated that he feels his privacy has been invaded, and that as he grows older, he becomes increasingly more uncomfortable with the fact that his naked body has been seen across the globe for years.
Spencer has also stated (according to a New York Times article), that he has been in therapy for many years because of this photo, and has constantly been reminded that he has no privacy with his body. He also claims to have missed employment opportunities. I can see where Specer Elden is coming from. As an adult, it must be hard to be recognized for being the "naked Nirvana baby" instead of who you actually are as a person. However, Spencer has recreated the album cover on multiple occasions, mainly when the album has an important anniversay. In that case, it's hard for me to fully believe that he feels a large amount of shame, and may be looking to just get some money out of the situation. The situation is a bit tricky to understand! Feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions below!

  1. I never saw this! Every time I've seen this album cover it's made me feel uncomfortable. I always wondered what the person as an adult thinks of this. I would like to know the true extent to if he truly feels violated from this, or if he's looking for money. Especially as you said he's recreated it before . I'll definitely be following this situation and I'm interested to see how it plays out. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi! I remember reading about this on instagram when the story first broke. I totally agree that it can be difficult to have this much attention drawn to you at such a young age. Especially because it's a naked picture. But I also believe that this is being blown out of proportion a bit. He has recreated and profited off the album cover for years and if it was really that upsetting, I would want nothing to do with the picture anymore. Great post!
